When a Tesla crashed on Lakeshore Blvd. in Toronto last month, the first people on scene knew there were occupants inside but couldn’t immediately get them out. “You couldn’t open the car,” said Rick Harper, a Canada Post employee who saw flames shooting from the vehicle and stopped to help. With the help of other bystanders, they were able to smash one of the car’s windows and pull a woman to safety. Four others, including the driver, died inside the vehicle.

MONTREAL — The employers association at the Port of Montreal locked out nearly 1,200 longshore workers Sunday night, bringing a halt to traffic at the port. The Maritime Employers Association is calling on federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon to intervene in the dispute to resolve the impasse at Canada’s second-biggest port. “This lockout affects not only the 1,200 longshoremen directly impacted by the work stoppage, but it also impacts over 10,000 workers in the logistics sector, from trucking and railway employees to maritime agents and pilots,” she said in a statement.

Dockworkers' Union to Suspend Strike

The union representing 45,000 striking U.S. dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports has reached a deal to suspend their strike until Jan. 15 to provide time to negotiate a new contract, a person briefed on the matter says.

The union, the International Longshoremen’s Association, is to resume working immediately at least until January said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement has yet to be signed.

The agreement will allow the union and the U.S Maritime Alliance, which represents the shippers and ports, time to negotiate a new six-year contract. The person also said both sides reached agreement on wage increases, but details weren’t available.

The union went on strike early Tuesday after its contract expired in a dispute over pay and the automation of tasks at the ports from Maine to Texas. The strike came at the peak of the holiday shopping season at 36 ports that handle about half the cargo from ships coming into and out of the United States.

The cause isn’t clear, but the effect is: Debris has been washing up on the shores of the island, and federal authorities say operations at the Vineyard Wind project “are shut down until further notice,” the Nantucket Current reports. Beaches on the island’s south shore were closed to swimmers Tuesday morning after residents reported seeing fiberglass and pieces of green and white foam. “You can walk on the beaches; however, we strongly recommend you wear footwear due to sharp, fiberglass shards and debris,” said Harbormaster Sheila Lucey.
