Despite this, growing American opposition to it, and legal disputes related to it (see 1, 2), it still seems to be exempt from most federal regulation. Regarding the hazards associated with fracking wastewater disposal, in 2019 Rolling Stone magazine published an article about radioactive fracking waste being used to de-ice roads and horror stories associated with this in Ohio and other states (see 1, 2). More recently, in the Buckeye state, environmentalists and oil companies joined forces to fight state policies regarding the dumping of fracking wastewater. Unfortunately, their efforts may be too little, too late.
