77 Million People Were Pushed Into “Extreme Poverty” Last Year, U.N. Blames Pandemic 🌎🦠@COVID19Up: According to a new report from the United Nations (U.N.) released on Tuesday (April 12), the coronavirus pandemic pushed 77 million people into extreme poverty last year. The 208-page report from the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs also says 1 in 5 developing countries will not see a gross domestic product return to 2019 levels within the next year. “There is no excuse for inaction at this defining moment of collective responsibility, to ensure hundreds of millions of people are lifted out of hunger and poverty,” U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said. “We must invest in access for decent and green jobs, social protection, healthcare and education leaving no one behind.”
