And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it. It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering. Leviticus 6:16-17 Here, we see Aaron and his sons eating bread that unleavened. Leaven is an old word for rising agents used to make bread fluffy. This might be yeast most typically, or baking soda/powder, or eggs, etc. In Scripture, when used in the physical manner, leaven often is given yeast-like properties, so probably a form of yeast. God uses the term leaven to also describe sin, and how just like a little leaven leavens the whole lump, so a little sin spreads and becomes a cancer to the soul. I paraphrased a passage from the Gospels in that last sentence, where leaven could be interpreted "raiser" and "raises" the whole lump. When we bake a loaf of yeast bread today, we talk about giving the dough time to rise, traditionally with three rises, two in the bowl, and the last one in the pan. Secondly in this passage from Leviticus, we see mention of the sacrifices ONLY reserved for the priesthood to eat, including the sin and trespass offerings. As we begin Passion Week today, we remember why Christ came to earth as a baby in a manger. He chose to walk the way of the Cross to become the perfect sacrifice for our sins, once and for all, and then to rise again to conquer death and grant us life eternal with Him. Next weekend, we will celebrate Good Friday, the day Christ took our place, paying the death penalty for us on the Cross, and then we'll celebrate Resurrection Sunday, when He rolled away the stone from the tomb and walked out in his glorified body to greet first the women, and then the rest of His disciples. The sacrifices for redemption, given in the Law, have been completed once and for all by the perfect Lamb of God! Indeed, today, we cry Hosanna! Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord!

When someone quotes from one of the Books of the Law, is your knee-jerk reaction to jump down their throat accusing them of forcing fellow believers back under the law? That seems to be the case with some out there I found out this weekend. As Christians, we are free from the law. In Christ, we can read the Books of the Law and see God's plan of redemption given in types, rituals, and symbols that the Jewish people were to practice to the day of Christ's death and resurrection. Sprinkled through all of that, are guidelines that brought better hygiene to hospitals after world war 1. Guidelines that keep your dishes clean. Guidelines that brought us the concept of Spring Cleaning. There are guidelines for food management, medical practices, business dealings, etc. Are you bound to keep them or lose your salvation? Heck no! The Apostle Paul spoke of those who thought such an erroneous way as judiazers and had lost their salvation. When we read the Books of the Law now, we don't read them as the rule books they were for the Jewish people. We read them to a) understand the Jewish rulebook and how that pointed to Christ, and what Christ said He fulfilled and completed on the Cross. b) to understand the different way of life that God called the Jewish people to that was separate from their nation neighbours and why, and in so doing learn many of the guidelines I mentioned in the previous paragraph above. c) There are many spiritual, social, physical, economic, nutritional truthful nuggets hidden in these pages that we can glean from without "going back under the law". I have four more "food in Scripture" posts from the Torah and then these quotes move into the Action/Adventure books and on into the rest of the Bible. We'll see what other reactions I get as we continue to look at examples of food and meat in Scripture.
