Google plans to make its digital wallet available to children whose parents or guardians use the Family Link app so they can perform tap-to-pay transactions through NFC and biometrics. Google Wallet is in the midst of a grand expansion taking in mobile driver’s licenses, passports and “everything else.” The version for kids will be able to store gift cards, event tickets and contactless payment cards, according to Android Police. Parents would have to approve the addition of each credential to the digital wallet, and can monitor payments and remove cards they have previously approved. It will not be able to store digital IDs or support online purchases. Authentication is performed with a PIN or password, or using fingerprint or face biometrics.

Human rights organizations are expressing support for the U.S. government’s plans to introduce new export controls on facial recognition systems and recommending additional controls on remote biometric identification. The recommendations were submitted this week by ten groups, including Freedom House, Access Now, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. In July, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Security and Industry (BIS) proposed amendments introducing two new item controls for facial recognition to the Commerce Control List (CCL). The new rules would create controls for facial recognition systems that are designed for mass surveillance and crowd scanning and give foreign governments the ability to monitor, track or detain people unlawfully.

Data brokerage National Public Data has filed for bankruptcy months after admitting that “hundreds of millions” of people were affected in one of the largest data breaches in history, according to The Register. The bankruptcy petition states: “The debtor is likely liable through the application of various state laws to notify and pay for credit monitoring for hundreds of millions of potentially impacted individuals.”
