I was talking throughout 2021 about the need to find people with deep pockets who could build alternative infrastructure to host their own websites, own domains, own email system, own payment system, etc. I got blocked here on MeWe by a guy because I told him he was still trusting a 3rd party when he used Protonmail (not to mention the few people I know who use it have occasionally run into trouble making it work for them). While I wish Gab was generally more private, the founder does have those deep pockets, IS building his own infrastructure for various items on that tech list, and judging from the progress bar since I finally joined this year, others believe in what he's doing and are helping to fund the effort. The only mainstream platform I am still on, and that mostly to just share stuff, I don't interact there or hang out there, is LinkedIn. But that is owned by Microsoft as is Skype and Bing. At some point, I foresee having to wake up one day, and discover the only way I can carry on with my computer is to install Linux. Why? Because fellow techs who dive deeper into OS workings than I ever have, grouse about not being able to shut off every report vector back to MS! MS was founded by Bill Gates! Guess who is very near the top of those who are calling the shots behind the scenes as the biggest private funder of WHO??!! Microsoft's current CEO was at Davos this week attending WEF meetings! Google was there too! The modern connected public got too used to a few companies offering everything, and now we need to wean ourselves off them and decentralize our use of the Internet in our daily lives.
