  • The United Nations General Assembly will this week adopt the UN Cybercrime Treaty, with the US expected to be among the countries that support the controversial document. Opponents will then have to hope that various UN member-states would eventually opt not to sign and ratify the treaty, which has variously been described as “flawed” and all the way to being “a threat to free speech and privacy” and a tool for “transnational oppression.”

  • In the letter, addressed to Canadians, Singh says he will "put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons," and "give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them." This latest blow — seeing the NDP pull out the only pillar of parliamentary support the embattled Liberal government was relying on to stay in power — comes just ahead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arriving at Rideau Hall to shuffle his cabinet. "I called for Justin Trudeau to resign, and he should," Singh said, not specifying how early into the 2025 sitting this motion moving to defeat the prime minister's Liberal government could be advanced.

  • It is absolutely amazing, AND HEARTBREAKING, that we have to even do this but:

We are trying to get bills passed or amended in each state that states all patients can have a family member or advocate with them at all times. We are making traction in 13 states and have gotten some bills passed but we need to get it out to the public to drive public support. Steve Reiter, the founder of the project, has a tragic story of his young wife dying alone in the hospital. We have thousands of victims that this happened to and want to get iron clad legislation so this doesn't happen again.

It would really help us get the word out with a goal of building state committees to lobby our representatives by doing lots of media. Most likely it would be Steve, the founder, a victim, a doctor or nurse and possible an attorney on the interview if possible.

Please read the bills attached in the link provided, you will clearly see the problems with these bills. Any input would be appreciated as well.

As a key funder of influenza virus research, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a component of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, strongly supports the continuation of this moratorium pending the resolution of critical policy issues related to the rationale for performing and reporting such experiments."

  • Trump’s return to the world stage – even though his official inauguration is on January 20 – is already claiming numerous victims. Arguably, even the fall of both the French and German government in recent months have been given some impetus by the political events in the US. But one of the clearest victims appears to be Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who resigned yesterday, citing differences with PM Trudeau’s Cabinet over how to prepare for a looming trade war with its big neighbour. Observers say her comments in her resignation letter on “eschewing political gimmicks” likely refer to the temporary tax cuts and pay-checks planned by the government to support consumption. She sees handing out money as fiscally imprudent. Given that she announced her decision just hours before she was due to speak in Parliament on the fiscal and economic outlook, markets reacted with a fall in the Canadian dollar (depreciating some 0.4% vis-à-vis the US dollar) and rising bond yields (some 7bp on the 10y note)

  • The federal government’s fall economic statement blows past the previously announced “fiscal guardrail” that was supposed to keep the deficit below $40 billion. The government’s revised deficit for the 2023-24 fiscal year is $61.9 billion – over 50% more than the limit Chrystia Freeland set out previously.

  • Trudeau’s former public safety minister, Marco Mendicino, finds himself at the center of controversy as the Canadian Parliament debates whether to formally censure him for “deliberately lying” about the justification for invoking the Emergencies Act and freezing the bank accounts of civil liberties supporters during the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests. Conservative MP Glen Motz, a vocal critic, emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “Parliament deserves to receive clear and definitive answers to questions.
